Splendid specimens: cinema seats with African fabric covers

Splendid specimens: cinema seats with African fabric covers

We keep reporting on extraordinary projects that result from our FABRICS have arisen. Today we would like to introduce you to a very special UPCYCLING project. The retro designer armchair "Oscar", made from an old cinema armchair and our African cotton fabric "Safari Zebra". Who hasn't always wanted to have such a CINEMA ARMCHAIR at home that is otherwise only seen in hip bars or fashion stores? You can read here how expensive it was and which work steps were necessary!

What was used

Three steps were taken to create the finished designer armchair with a vintage look. The first thing to do is to find a rickety old cinema seat. The customer, in this case a good friend, found such an armchair on eBay classifieds for € 10. He also needed a suitable material. It should be colorful and somehow vintage to match the style of the old armchair. Since the armchair has large surfaces, we took one of our fancy prints with a large repeat. After some back and forth, the choice was on Safari Zebra. With the jagged lightning pattern, the wild color gradient and the clear lines, it creates an incomparable effect. All in all, we needed about 1,5 m. Cost: € 34,35.

How was the armchair covered?

Since neither the good friend nor one of the True Fabrics Team can relocate an armchair, we go to the next interior designer. He moved us into the armchair for 120 € within a few days. Anyone who has experience in upholstering furniture or knows someone in their circle of acquaintances can save considerable costs at this point. A small note should not be missing: the African fabrics are robust, but when it comes to upholstering furniture that is used intensively on a daily basis, you should choose a thicker fabric. In our case, however, this medium-weight cotton fabric is sufficient, as the armchair is in the hallway and is used to put on and take off shoes.

The result

The result is impressive. Absolutely unique with bright colors and a design like from the 70s. For 165 € (10 € armchair, 35 € fabric, 120 € interior designer), in three manageable work steps and less than a week, we turned an old rickety cinema chair into a real eye-catcher.

Thanks to the folding function of the seating area, it fits perfectly into the narrow hallway without wasting unnecessary space. There is space in the cup holder for items such as a shoehorn in our case - how practical! Donning and undressing shoes is twice as much fun and every guest is delighted with this extravagant seating option.
