Sewing idea to sew a skirt yourself

“Buy less, choose well, make it last” (Vivienne Westwood)

Not just for Fashion Revolution Week, which has just taken place, but always, every day. And with the GOTs certified Indian fabrics Slow fashion is even easy for us. Because: environmentally friendly production and fair trade as well as donations to aid projects.

Phandana: Indian hand blockprint - swinging godets

The choice of fabrics from our wide range of countries (Guatemala, Ghana, Togo, South Africa, Nepal, India, Malaysia and Australia) for the skirt fell on Phandana from India. This light batiste with the interesting, turquoise-colored pattern in the elaborate hand-block print technique made me think of it Skirt model 132 inspired by the Burda.

The twelve godets used give the skirt a nice volume without being 'significant'. The fragrant lightness is retained, thanks to the light, fine fabric (80g / m2). The pattern of the fabric can still come into its own, despite the many incisions. A fabric consumption of 4,55 m (with 135 cm fabric width) is required for this, but it conjures up a dream of a summer skirt. The skirt length is of course variable, depending on your taste. And the good piece is suitable for many occasions: birthdays, celebrations, leisure time and much more.

Many possible combinations for every style

The skirt can not only be combined with a white blouse, or here a dark turquoise-colored top, but also with simple shirts in white or cream - taking up the color of the pattern. But the classic denim shirt also makes a nice look. There are hardly any limits to the variety.

Special features when sewing the skirt

Twelve godets are sewn into two skirt panels, each 100 cm wide. That means a total of ten in the skirt panels and one each in the side seams. That is the most difficult and complex thing about this skirt. The large hem width that is inevitable (approx. 9,60 m) simply requires a little patience 🙂

Special features of the substance

The Indian block print fabric is a real eye-catcher due to its great pattern, but the real value is in its production. It is decorated meter by meter with wooden stamps in laborious manual labor. You can see examples of the hand-blockprint production in the pictures. The stamps are hand-carved according to traditional patterns and then pressed onto the fabric with paint in many, many steps.
