SEWING INSTRUCTIONS: CLUTCH LUS
The Lus clutch is a surprise. Although it is so nice and small and handy, there are three compartments hidden in it so that you can easily organize your most important things. The middle compartment is closed with a zipper. The small bag is carried with a loop for the wrist, which also closes your bag at the same time. The bag was sewn here in the ebook from the screen printing materials from Berlin, Pattern # 8 of the Colorblind Patterns. The fabrics come in 90 x 40 cm prints and are wonderfully suitable for your new handbag.
Tools
- Fabric scissors
- big ruler
- optional: Wonder clips or pins
Material
- Pattern fabric
- Combination fabric (here fine cord), approx. 0,5 m
- Zip fastener, 25 cm long
- Cotton cord in black, approx. 1 m
- Volume fleece H630, approx. 0,5 m
1. Cutting of sample fabric:
- Cut 1x outer pocket
- Cut 2x zip pockets
- 2x zipper patch
- 2x closure
2. Combination fabric cut:
- Cut 1x outer pocket
- Cut 2x zip pockets
3. Cutting insert:
- Cut 1x outer pocket
- Cut 2x zip pockets
Now iron your insert on the back of your combination fabric according to the instructions.
4. Prepare the zipper
Take both pattern pieces for the patches on the zipper. Fold them in the middle with the wrong side of the fabric inward and pin them to each end of your zipper. Now stitch them tightly to the zipper close to the edge.
5. Secure the zipper
Place a pattern piece for your zippered pocket with the right side up in front of you. Pin the bottom of the zipper to the top edge and pin it in place. Then put a pattern piece from your plain-colored fabric right sides together. All edges lie on top of one another, the zipper lies between the fabrics.
6. Sew on the zipper
Sew the two pattern pieces together with the zipper at the top edge, the width of a presser foot. Lock the beginning and end of the seam well.
Pay attention to the slider on the zipper. Sew until just before it, leave the needle in the fabric, lift the presser foot and carefully pull the slider back past the needle. Then just continue sewing normally.
7. Quilting
Fold down the two pieces of fabric with the seam allowance in between so that the zipper is with the open edge facing up. Iron the edge and then stitch it close to the edge. Here, too, proceed in the same way as described in step 6 for the slider.
8. Complete the zipper
Repeat steps 6 and 7 with the other two pieces of fabric and sew them onto the open edge of the zipper. Here, too, the pattern fabric is on the inside, the plain-colored fabric on the outside.
9. Put the zip pocket together
Lay your pattern fabric and your plain-colored fabric right sides together. The zipper is in the middle. Fold it over at the edges with the seam allowance towards the pattern fabric.
10. Sew the zip pocket together
Now sew all pieces of fabric together with a seam allowance of 1 cm all around. Leave a turning opening of approx. 5 cm at the lower edge of the pattern fabric. Make sure the zipper is open. Lock the beginning and end of the seam well.
11. Cut the seam allowance and turn
Cut the seam allowance diagonally at all corners without cutting into the seam. Now turn your zippered pocket through the reversible opening and the zipper.
Close the seam allowance with a short seam with your sewing machine or with the mattress stitch by hand. Finally, put the pattern fabric into the plain-colored fabric and shape the corners well.
12. Pin the outer fabric together
Place both pattern pieces right sides together and pin them in place.
13. Sew the outer pocket together
Sew both parts together all around with a seam allowance of 1 cm. Again, leave a turning opening of approx. 5 cm on one side edge. Lock the beginning and end of the seam well again.
14. Turn
First cut the seam allowance at the corners again at an angle and then turn your outer pocket through the opening. Shape the corners out nicely, put the reversible opening together and iron your outer pocket.
15. Attach the clasp and loop
Cut an approx. 15 cm long piece from your cord and place it with the ends in the middle at a distance of approx. 7 cm from the upper short edge on your outer pocket. Now place the piece of fabric for the fastener in the middle and sew it with a zigzag stitch.
Repeat this step on the other short edge with a piece of cord approx. 25 cm long. Both together form a fastener as well as the loop to wear.
16. Topstitch straps
Now put your outer pocket together with the zip pocket. The zippered pocket is on the inside, the unicoloured side of the outer pocket faces outwards. Pin them together at the side edges and sew them together at the side edges the width of a presser foot. Again, lock the beginning and end of the seam well.
